Lab report November 10th 2008: the rockstar wannabes

So, judging by the camera the following morning, this months Stet Lab was so successful that Ad-Hoc… just couldn’t resist posing for the album art. Well why wouldn’t we after the fantastic collaboration that occurred?

I have performed at several of the Stet Lab evenings and as the only performer that doesn’t have an instrument that is material to hide behind, I often feel exposed and perhaps somewhat uncomfortable; this has consequently had a knock-on affect on my performance. However, not so much this month. Continue reading ‘Lab report November 10th 2008: the rockstar wannabes’

Stet Lab November 10th 2008: audio recordings

Audio recordings of the November 10th Stet Lab are now online.

A very big thank you to Franziska Schroeder who took time to grace us with her presence, share her expertise, and demonstrate (especially to Han-earl Park who joined her on stage) exactly how good an improviser she is.

Thanks also to Veronica Tadman for organizing The Real-Time Company (for the Ad-Hoc Association) of… herself with Paul Dowling and Barry Twomey, to all who participated onstage (Andrea Bonino and Kevin Terry), and to the behind-the-scenes personnel. Kudos also to The Roundy and its staff for again hosting this left-field venture. (And a quick thanks to the Cork Indy for their write-up!)

Finally, as always, thanks to all—newcomers and old-timers—who came to listen, hangout and await the leap off the edge. We couldn’t (and wouldn’t) do this without you!

One year after the launch of Cork’s monthly improvisation event, Stet Lab returns on Monday, 10th November to its very first venue—upstairs at The Roundy. To celebrate this anniversary, Stet Lab will be inviting both regular participants and newcomers, and welcoming special guest, the Belfast-based extraordinary saxophonist-improviser-theorist Franziska Schroeder.

If real-time sonic deviance is something that you enjoy, then Franziska Schroeder’s saxophone prowess is definitely not to be missed. Her technique is quick and virtuosic: every second of the improvisation brings a new dimension to the performance (switch off for an instant and you will be left wondering how the sonic landscape changed). Having a sound and approach that sets her in a league of her own, it is unsurprising that Schroeder has a distinguished background that includes a fellowship at the Sonic Arts Research Centre in Belfast.

Schroeder is the founder of the digital media collective l a u t, and was the artistic director of the ICMC Roots Ensemble. She has released a double CD with her trio FAINT (with pianist Pedro Rebelo and drummer Steven Davis), and May There Be… (with Rebelo, ’cellist Guilherme Rodrigues and violist Ernesto Rodrigues), both on the Creative Source Recordings label.

“Over the past twelve month, Stet Lab has successfully presented ten events and welcomed a dozen guest artists,” said Stet Lab founder and curator Han-earl Park, who will also be performing with Schroeder. “I’m pleased and excited to launch our second year of onstage mutations and hybrids with an event featuring Franziska Schroeder; I cannot think of any better musician with whom to celebrate Stet Lab’s first birthday.”

Also performing at the event will be a group of Cork-based improvisers, Veronica Tadman (voice), Paul Dowling (bass) and Barry Twomey (guitar), appearing as The Real-Time Company (for the Ad-Hoc Association) of….

The event will begin at 9:00 pm (doors open at 8:45 pm) and entry is €10 (€5).

Stet Lab’s Winter 2008 season will continue at The Roundy on Monday, 8th December featuring another saxophonist, Birmingham-based Bruce Coates.

Lab report June 12th 2008: being the odd-one-out

There’s a lot to be said for being the odd-one-out: you can be lazy.

There’s also a lot to be said for putting two ‘alikes’ together; be it the same instrumentation, or people who share a name. Okay, AFAIK, tactically, as an improviser, that latter factor doesn’t make an iota of difference, but I can vouch for the former. Continue reading ‘Lab report June 12th 2008: being the odd-one-out’

Lab report June 12th 2008: noisiest ‘hoedown’

“This was possibly the noisiest ‘hoedown’ ever………………………………………” —Everybody’s sub-conscious

Anyway, it began with several short burst to get things started, from the house band of the evening. This comprised Eoin Callery (mountain dulcimer), Susan Geaney (flute), Tony O’Connor (bass guitar) and Barry Twomey (guitar). A very well behaved bass player who could have crush the puny acoustic forces, swelled and tinkered over the guitar and dulcimer duel. Stet Lab June 12th 2008: audio recordings

Audio recordings of the June 12th Stet Lab are now online.

One of the funkiest (musically and olfactorally) Lab, special thanks to the main fiddler, Murray Campbell, who was joined on the night by Marian Murray and Han-earl Park. Thanks also to the The Real-Time Company (for the Ad-Hoc Association) of… Eoin Callery, Susan Geaney, Tony O’Connor and Barry Twomey, kudos to all who participated (Melanie L. Marshall, Veronica Tadman and Kevin Terry), and the behind-the-scenes personnel, our photographer for the night, John Hough, and Amber Cone who managed the door.

Finally, a big thanks to all who came to listen, hang-out and generate a vibe (including the two dudes who added a touch of East European sophistication).
